CheckerBoard Days by Stephen White

A solo show featuring original hand pulled screen prints, original paintings and limited edition T-shirts by the Sheffield based artist Stephen White. For this exhibition Stephen presents new works, which include paintings and drawings on canvas and wood in his first solo exhibition in West Yorkshire since relocating to his home town of Sheffield in 2007.

As the celebrated sequence of monthly roof mounted neon love song quotes are switched off for the final time on Valentines day, Neon Workshops celebrates this ambitious one year collaboration between Lucas and Wheater with an exhibition of supporting work and documentation. The exhibition will continue until 22 March 2012.

The Hepworth is getting poetic for Burns Night - hear free readings, performances and recitals from some of the country’s most intriguing voices including Sarah Hymas, David Tait, Max Wallis and Andrew McMillan.

An exhibition of 8 new paintings by Matthew Askey. There will be a catalogue available with all 8 paintings reproduced and an introductory text by Revd Iain McKillop all about the history of Emblems in art and culture.
‘Matthew Askey’s imagery of new life and of death – shown with the emblems of the child and the skull is not innovative. Both subjects are enhanced by layers of meaning and associations accumulated through centuries of art and culture...' (Revd Iain McKillop).

Matthew will exhibit a photographic series which explores various abstract concepts in culture and society. The series provides a symbolic visual commentary from the Beat Generation to the Jimmy Reid inspired Death of the Industry attempting to integrate Sociology and Photography as a means of study and observation.

Inner Workings
by Mary Duggan
The images in this exhibition have been created digitally and are a truly abstract form derived from the mathematics of complexity. The fractal flames invite exploration without forcing meaning on the viewer who in turn brings their own interpretation and meaning to the form. The images stimulate the human response to try to make sense of an abstract form and evoke structures from nature, or from the constructed world though do not deliberately reproduce them.

Bright and colourful watercolours painted by Clare White, a friend of Dame Barbara Hepworth will be exhibited. Clare was born in Sidmouth, Devon in 1903 and moved to St Ives Cornwall in 1949 where she became an active member of the renowned art colony alongside sculptor Barbara Hepworth and other such luminaries as potter Bernard Leach and painter Wilhelmina Barns-Graham.
'Clare White was a keen observer of the great British modern art movement of the mid-20th century as well as an accomplished artist in her own right.' (Andrew Pollard, Curator).

Silent Witness

‘Silent Witness’ began in September 2010 during an Artist Residency, whereby Carrie began the intimate exploration of witnessing familial narration. The impetus was a photograph of her grandfather in World War One uniform, stood beside a seated compatriot whom no family member can name: ‘The photograph is imbued with intrigue; and has embedded itself within me since childhood – that being the Silent Witness.’ (Carrie Scott-Huby)

Two groups of architecture students from Sheffield University will be exhibiting research and work undertaken in Wakefield:

Drury Lane Library
One group will present ideas for the redevelopment of Drury Lane Library, should The Art House expand following the Library’s relocation later this year. The group have been looking at a creative vision for the building, which seeks to draw attention to its historical features and imbed equality within the design.

Personal Experiences of Wakefield. Continuing their research into how the people of Wakefield experience different spaces within their city, this group of architecture students will ask Artwalkers about the spaces you enjoy, which ones you don't, and which ones you have any particular memories of.

Open Studios; there will also be a chance to see behind-the-scenes, meet the artists and purchase work that catches your eye as studio holders open their doors to Artwalkers.

There is just one month to go before the New Lights Exhibition closes.

The exhibition showcases the nominees for the New Lights Art Prize; a new award for budding young painters in the North of England. The award, worth £10,000 to the winner, is to provide a springboard for young artists to turn professional.

The works were shortlisted by a panel of independent judges representing the arts world, including; Kate Brindley,
Director of Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (mima); Paul Hobson, Director of the Contemporary Arts Society and William Tillyer, an internationrtist.

An installation of sound and light to create atmosphere in remembering the ‘Forgotten Heros’ of war.Sharon says ‘This work was first inspired by a triptych painted by Paulo Uccello entitled The Battle of San Romano. What I saw in these paintings led me to research and uncover the history and origins of something beautiful, yet something extremely horrifying.
’Winter Wonderland
An exhibition of specially created ‘trimmings’, put together in response to an Open Call by Westgate Studios artists Alice Bradshaw and Bob Milner. Alice and Bob invited other artists and creatives to decorate as many Christmas trees as possible in whatever size, shape and materials they liked. This could be baubles, paper chains, tinsel, hangings or even making a tree!

Concerned with interior space, habitation and corporeal. Sean’s paintings are composed of forms and spaces that reference Megalithic temples. Charlotte’s concerns lie within the inequality of others.

Most of Drew’s work is charcoal, pastel and conte, and based on architectural subjects. Drew says of his work: ‘I am fascinated by the repeat shapes and patterns of structures such as the roof girders of St. Pancras Station, fire escape ladders of New York tenement blocks, piers etc. and the buildings and bridges of Santiago Calatrava, which lead to strong visual images in black and white.’

Orangery Wednesday
The Orangery will transform into a secret cinema, showcasing the best home grown short films from budding local filmmakers, including Bradford’s Lucy Ray, Leeds born Thomas Midgley and Beverley Addy. Exhibition by Oliver Neilson Leeds based artist, Oliver Neilson (Artsmix Leeds ‘Emerging Artist’ of 2009), will exhibit in the gallery space. Neilson describes himself as ‘a street artist in reverse’. Chevron (2011)a digital film by Patrick Murphy (10 minutes) This film explores the familiar compositional structure of the Chevron, an insignia found widely in use in the UK. It will be projected onto The Orangery, reflecting a perfect mix of the contemporary with the historical. Patrick, a studio holder at The Art House in Wakefield, says: ‘I wanted to somehow free [the chevron] from its current and past connotations and create a film that explores interactions with flat colour and colour relationships.’

As Christmas looms the Theatre’s thoughts turn to Pantomime season – a time of magic and hope. This year the Theatre Royal will present Aladdin. They would like Artwalkers to join in too - What would your wishes be? What would you ask of a Genie? Share your wishes with them and add these to the Christmas Wishes Tree.

Award-winning artists Angie de Courcy Bower and Lisa V Robinson were selected by The Art House and Artist-Curator Victoria Lucas to launch the initiative. Both artists are Wakefield-based and take inspiration from their surrounding environment through the medium of paint, whilst approaching their subject matter in very unique ways.

As the development agency for voluntary arts in Wakefield, DIVA is at the hub of a vibrant, active, local arts network. Come and find out more about what they do on this month’s Artwalk. They will be putting together an exhibition to mark their 15th birthday, so if you took part in any of DIVA’s past projects and have some fond DIVA memories come and share them.

Trevor Kendrick is interested in using high contrast ,“moody” subject lighting to emphasise the forms he draws. His favourite subject matter is figurative / portraiture with an interest in performing musicians. For the Artwalk Trevor will exhibit work in black and white ink, watercolour and acrylic pieces with a “Blues” theme.
There will also be demonstrations of the Dulcimer, a stringed musical instrument.

A visit to The Hepworth during Wakefield's Artwalk for the perfect opportunity to explore art after hours. Relax with a drink and enjoy the exhibition by Eva Rothschild, collection displays featuring Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore, and special performances by Wakefield Jazz Duo Russell Henderson on tenor saxophone and Jamie Taylor on guitar. Together the duo will exploit the axe ‘n sax possibilities in a contemporary jazz context playing original and familiar material.

Lumen by Sean and Charlotte MannionLumen is concerned with interior space, habitation and corporeal. The paintings and prints are composed of forms and spaces that reference Megalithic temples found on the Meditteranean islands of Malta and Gozo together with the remains of World War One sea defences found on the north east coast at Kilnsea, East Yorkshire.

Ruth M Robson is a Leeds based photographer. Of this exhibition Ruth states, 'I first became fascinated by the flow currents of the River Aire at Castleford when I went to see the new pedestrian bridge...From the bridge I saw the patterns that formed on the river surface by the bubbles created as the water flowed over the weir and was impeded by the rocks and bridge supports. The presence of dissolved humus from moorland peat introduced by the numerous becks and streams upstream emphasized the flow patterns in their tenuous and fibrous form.'

A new solo exhibition by text artist Aidan Moesby will open during this month’s Artwalk, his first solo exhibition in Wakefield. Aidan will make work in response to The Art House and also show existing work. This will make the exhibition, in part, site specific. The exhibition will utilise a number of spaces within The Art House, providing visitors with an opportunity to see different works as they tour the building.
Artist Talk: Aidan Moesby, 7pm Work by Art House studio holders will be on display, including large scale pieces by Adele Stephenson, and a number of artists will open the door to their workspace for the Artwalk Open Studios.

New Lights Art Prize

I am delighted to announce that two of my paintings have been shortlisted for The Valerie Sykes, New Lights Art Prize.

The prize was open to painters between the ages of 23 & 35, living and working in the North of England, with a prize award of £10,000 going to the winner.

Paintings by 24 northern artists have been shortlisted from the 232 entries for the £10,000 New Lights award by a panel of independent judges representing the arts world. The judges are Kate Brindley, Director of Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (mima); Paul Hobson, Director of the Contemporary Arts Society and William Tillyer, an international artist.

All shortlisted works will be featured in a high profile exhibition at the Mercer Gallery in Harrogate. The winner will be announced at the preview, which will be held on Thursday 22nd September 2011. The exhibition will be opened to the public from Saturday 24 September 2011 until 8 January 2012.

The Art House are delighted to announce that the Sites in Sight: Art for the Quiet Times, our new art in empty spaces initiative, will launch on Thursday 15 September at 81 Cathedral Walk in The Ridings Centre. This is located in the Upper Mall and spent former times as Bay Trading and Past Times. Wakefield artists Angie de Courcy Bower and Lisa Robinson were selected by The Art House and Artist-Curator Victoria Lucas to launch the initiative. Both artists take inspiration from their surrounding environment through the medium of paint, whilst approaching their subject matter in very unique ways. Established as part of the vibrant art scene, both artists represent the talent and creativity that Wakefield encompasses.

Headingley Arts Trail

The Bowery gallery, in which I currently have a solo exhibition in their upstairs gallery, is organising the first Headingley Arts Trail; a collective exhibition based in and around Headingley, Leeds on the 12 - 14 November. Each venue will be exhibiting work from local artists and designer makers in houses and independent businesses.

"Over 80 artists from across Yorkshire will be displaying their work in homes and bars throughout Headingley – with the trail culminating at the Hyde Park Picture House. A total of 15 venues, including Arcadia bar and Salvo's restaurant, will be open for the public to visit over the two days and many works will be for sale. " Yorkshire Evening Post

‘The Working Artist’ brings together seven young contemporary artists, all of who engage in different practices and media. The diverse collection shows how the individual artists use their chosen mediums to explore the possibilities of making.
The title, The Working Artist, suggests a dual connotation that refers to the artist physically in the midst of creativity and production. Simultaneously it suggests the practicalities necessary for the artists to support their practices. It is this necessity which brought the artists together; as they gravitated to the same place of work the idea for this show was realised.

Amalgamate: Sonic Arts Project

A collobrative sonic arts exhibition which sees the BTEC High National Diploma in Music Performance students team up with Westgate Studios to create sonic compostions inspired by the resident artists.

The aim of the project was for the student to create an electroacoustic compostion based on or in response to a piece of art that the artist had put forward.

The composition was created using sounds originally recorded from the artist's studio, such as; a door closing, tapping a paint brush on a table, the artist speaking, walking around the studio etc. These sounds were then collected by the students and manipulated using a variety of music software to create a soundscape.

British Jazz composer and songwriter Fiona Nehama Abrahami has selected my 2008 painting "Untitled" to appear on her latest CD entitled Random Excess.

"Fiona Nehama Abrahami, working under her middle name Nehama, is a composer, musician, and author living in West Yorkshire, England. Her compositional style primarily references jazz, dub reggae, and classical to create a style which she affectionately calls jazz-dub. She plays guitar, fretless bass and keyboards, and uses various computer software programs like Finale, ACID, and SoundForge for composition and production" (Taken from MusicWomb)

Joan Day Bursary recipient Lisa V Robinson explores the possibilities of paint as a medium whilst attempting to find a special balance between abstraction and figuration.

As a tribute to the memory of Joan Day, a highly skilled painter who lived and worked in Yorkshire for much of her life, South Square Gallery offers an annual bursary to support an emerging painter to produce new work for solo exhibition. The gallery is delighted to present this year's winner, Lisa V Robinson, who, over the past four months has been producing new work at her Westgate studio, Wakefield.

Solo Exhibition

I am pleased to announce that I am the fourth winner of the annual Joan Day painting bursary.
Established in 2006, the award provides an emerging artist from West Yorkshire the support and funds to create a solo exhibition at the South Square Gallery in Thornton, Bradford. Previous winners include; Bob Thompson, Sarah Giles and Lucy Hird.

The exhibition is planned for september 2009, and will run for approximately a month. Exact details including dates and preview information will be finalised nearer the time.
